Meet the artist

Ida Helene Thorkildsen

Ida Helene Thorkildsen (b. 1996, Sandnes) is a visual artist educated at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, where she studied textile art in the Department of Medium and Material Based Art. She works with textile printing, collage, painting and installation.

Over several years, Thorkildsen has collected photographs and visual references from the Jæren coast, early 2000s popular culture and Oslo's underground scene. In her work, she explores the intersection of these different influences. Bold colours, metallic surfaces, pixelated transitions and futuristic lines meet the movement of the sea and the organic shapes of plants.

She explores how the body seeks connection and a sense of belonging in relation to different environments. Landscapes are not only physical places, but also something we carry with us through smell, sound, pace, light and movement. A landscape can therefore be experienced as a physical sensation or as a reminder of something that has been.

Using reactive dyes, textile dyes and acrylic paint, Thorkildsen combines different materials through layered processes and abstract compositions. The colours spread in ways that cannot always be controlled, leaving room for spontaneity and the unpredictable. In her collage work, she cuts up, rearranges and shifts elements, while the body itself becomes an active part of the process.

Movement, restlessness and rhythm are central to her work. Thorkildsen explores how identity is shaped and transformed through encounters with our surroundings, and how memories, places and visual impressions can be woven together across time and space.
